The results show that households with a larger number of members have a higher total consumption but a lower consumption per person. The composition of the household is therefore a key determinant of the potential savings from solar panels.
Even a single-person household can make financial savings of around €1,712.20 over the lifetime of the solar panels. The potential savings increase with the number of household members, reaching a maximum benefit of almost €5,000 in the last household typology.
The data on household energy consumption and on the financial costs of installing solar panels in homes have provided valuable information on the development of self-consumption through solar panels. On the whole, solar panels are clearly profitable, as they produce energy at a lower cost than the price paid for traditional supply.
In addition to the abovementioned factors that determine the spatial distribution of financial performance, economic revenue would also be affected by temporal (daily, monthly and seasonal) variations of solar PV generation and residential electricity consumption.
For this analysis, the lifetime of the solar panel is assumed to be 25 years (Malandrino et al, 2017; Xu et al, 2018). Finally, the financial cost of these installations is 1,600 euros per kWp, in addition to the 21% Value Added Tax (VAT), which can be reduced to 10% in certain situations.
For the latter, the government expects 40,000 households to benefit, with the aim of installing solar panels and reducing their consumption of energy from the grid (Ministerio para la Transición Ecológica y el Reto Demográfico, 2021).
