Equalization is a process of controlled battery over-charging. It is used as a routine maintenance activity and a remedial activity for flooded lead acid batteries. It is part of the multi-stage charging process. Lead acid batteries suffer from ‘sulfation’.
Equalizing is an “over voltage-over charge” performed on flooded lead-acid batteries after they have been fully charged to help eliminate acid stratification. It helps to eliminate the acid stratification and sulfation that happens in all flooded lead acid batteries. Acid Stratification is the #1 killer of flooded lead acid batteries.
Equalizing charge is an essential maintenance procedure for lead-acid batteries that helps to keep them in optimal condition. This process involves applying a higher voltage than the normal charging voltage to the battery, which helps to balance the individual cell voltages and promote overall battery health.
For this reason, an equalization system is necessary, mainly for both VRLA and lithium-ion batteries [1-4]. In any battery charging process, a solution to ensure a voltage balance or equalization of the charge is needed to restore balance or at least prevent it from developing .
Figure 2 illustrates the impact of using an active equalization system for a pack of batteries. Indeed, with an active equalization system, a pack of batteries accomplishes at least 450 charging/discharging cycles, where the pack of batteries without active equalization reaches only 140 driving cycles.
In the realm of battery maintenance, equalizing charge is a crucial procedure, particularly for flooded lead-acid batteries. This specific maintenance technique ensures optimal performance and extends the lifespan of batteries by addressing common issues such as sulfation and voltage imbalances.

What is Equalizing Charge and Why Is It Important?
Equalizing charge is a maintenance technique used primarily for flooded lead-acid batteries. It involves charging the battery at a higher voltage than normal to ensure that all cells within the battery reach the same state of charge. This process helps remove sulfate crystals that accumulate on the battery plates over time, which can hinder ...
How to Equalize charge a flooded battery.
Equalization is complete when specific gravity values no longer rise during the gassing stage; Battery voltage during an equalization charge should be allowed to rise to 2.65V per cell +/- .05V (8V on a 6-volt battery and 16 volts on a 12V battery) NOTE: Many chargers do not have an equalization setting, so this procedure can''t be carried out.

What is Equalization?
The generation of battery gases will accompany all equalization. To keep battery gasses from accumulating inside, a flooded lead acid battery bank should have active ventilation to the outside. Over-equalization is conceivable. It will decrease battery lifespan because it can cause ageing of the lead plates inside the batteries.
