Prior research has generated a multitude of PV datasets, including global-scale datasets such as the Global Development Potential PV Indices . However, the availability of solar panel data obtained from high-resolution aerial/satellite images and labeled with semantic information is limited, and only available for certain regions .

We hope the data produced by DeepSolar can aid researchers, policymakers, and the industry in gaining a better understanding of solar adoption and its impacts. We developed DeepSolar, a deep learning framework analyzing satellite imagery to identify the GPS locations and sizes of solar photovoltaic panels.

Is deepsolar a good model for detecting solar panels?

The above early-stage work may encounter issues of low accuracy and time-consuming processes. In 2018, Yu et al. developed an innovative solar panel semantic segmentation model called DeepSolar, which demonstrated high detection accuracy using a large-scale dataset collected from 50 cities across the USA .

What is the deepsolar database?

We offer the DeepSolar database as a publicly available resource for researchers, utilities, solar developers, and policymakers to further uncover solar deployment patterns, build comprehensive economic and behavioral models, and ultimately support the adoption and management of solar electricity.

Can a segmentation model predict the location of solar panels?

With the aid of multitask learning, we aggregated the output results of various sizes and computed the corresponding loss, which enabled the segmentation model to generate predictions for both large- and small-size panels.
