A battery temperature sensor allows decisions to be made that adjust the charging voltage based on the battery temperature. As the battery temperature increases, the charge voltage should decrease. Using this sensor as an input to your charging system illustrates this voltage adjustment in the below graph.
In high-power applications, the charge controller requires multiple temperature sensors mounted on the Li-Ion battery. At least one sensor monitors each cell of the battery. NTC thermistors are the sensor of choice to provide temperature feedback to the ADC.
Two temperature sensors can be deployed in a battery monitoring system: one located on the negative terminal of the battery, and the other monitoring the ambient temperature. The difference between the two sensors' readings can then be used to indicate potential battery health issues or failures in the attached circuits.
At least one sensor monitors each cell of the battery. NTC thermistors are the sensor of choice to provide temperature feedback to the ADC. The charge controller monitors battery cell temperature individually or collectively depending on the controller type and number of cells in the battery.
A battery temperature monitoring system can check and alert if the battery temperature is rising, which can accelerate the reaction rate and cause the battery to accept more charging current, resulting in more gassing. This process continues, and the heat released causes the battery temperature to rise further. The heat released causes the battery temperature to rise, which accelerates the reaction.
To measure the temperature of a battery, you can install a temperature sensor on the negative terminal post. This will give you a graph of the temperature. With the addition of an ambient temperature sensor, the two temperatures can be plotted on the same graph and the difference (∆T) can be shown.
