Nanotechnology-enhanced Li-ion battery systems hold great potential to address global energy challenges and revolutionize energy storage and utilization as the world transitions toward sustainable and renewable energy, with an increasing demand for efficient and reliable storage systems.
As an alternative, Na-ion batteries (NIBs) have been widely accepted as an effective new route to supplement the market, especially in the field of energy storage. (1−4) Owing to the great efforts and contributions from various groups over the world, NIBs are now stepping into commercialization with a bright future.
The limitations of nanomaterials in energy storage devices are related to their high surface area—which causes parasitic reactions with the electrolyte, especially during the first cycle, known as the first cycle irreversibility—as well as their agglomeration.
These policies are mostly concentrated around battery storage system, which is considered to be the fastest growing energy storage technology due to its efficiency, flexibility and rapidly decreasing cost. ESS policies are primarily found in regions with highly developed economies, that have advanced knowledge and expertise in the sector.
Rechargeable batteries, as the representative technologies of energy storage, play a key role for decarbonization. After 30 years of development, Li-ion batteries (LIBs) have already walked into thousands of families, making it possible to reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.
This improvement in ionic conductivity increases the power output of the batteries and results in a faster charging time. Nanomaterials can enhance a Li-ion battery’s life to withstand the stress of repeated charging and discharging cycles, compared with their bulk counterparts .
