1. Introduction Rooftop photovoltaic power generation is installed on the roofs of buildings and directly connected to a low-voltage distribution network; it has the advantages of proximity to the user side, local consumption, and reduction in transmission costs. China’s existing residential building area is more than 700 billion m 2.
Shrestha and Raut (2020) assessed the technical, financial, and market potential of the rooftop PV system on residential buildings in three major cities of Nepal through a field survey instead of simulation, and the results showed that 35% of the city's annual electricity consumption could be covered by solar power.
Gernaat et al. (2020) estimated that the global suitable roof area for PV generation was 36 billion square meters. This represents a potential of 8.3 PWh/y, which is equivalent to 150% of the global residential electricity demand in 2015. This demonstrates the potential of replacing traditional electricity sources with rooftop PVs.
Rooftop PV consistently demonstrates a strong capacity for power generation across all building categories, with the Factory category leading the way at 18.18 TWh annually, followed by Apartment at 9.31 TWh and Others at 9.56 TWh. This aligns with the large roof areas available in these building types.
The standard approach to rooftop solar PV projects is to consume most of the generated electricity onsite and then export the surplus power to the grid at a relatively low wholesale market price. Instead of selling this excess electricity on the wholesale market, it may also be sold to neighbouring buildings without solar panels.
Their incorporation into building roofs remains hampered by the inherent optical and thermal properties of commercial solar cells, as well as by esthetic, economic, and social constraints. This study reviews research publications on rooftop photovoltaic systems from building to city scale.
