There are standards for nearly every stage of the PV life cycle, including materials and processes used in the production of PV panels, testing methodologies, performance standards, and design and installation guidelines.
The performance PV standards described in this article, namely IEC 61215 (Ed. 2 – 2005) and IEC 61646 (Ed.2 – 2008), set specific test sequences, conditions and requirements for the design qualification of a PV module.
1. Introduction Energy output for photovoltaic devices is commonly related to the declared Watt peak value, i.e. the electrical performance under standard test conditions (STC): the reliability of this value and its associated uncertainty are of crucial importance to manufacturers, operators and investors.
This standard applies to roof-mounted, ground-mounted, pole-mounted, or integrated-mounted modules used in a PV system with a voltage of 1000 volts or less. The National Electrical Code applies from an installation standpoint.
