Building upon both strands of work, we propose to characterize business models of energy storage as the combination of an application of storage with the revenue stream earned from the operation and the market role of the investor.
With the rise of intermittent renewables, energy storage is needed to maintain balance between demand and supply. With a changing role for storage in the ener-gy system, new business opportunities for energy stor-age will arise and players are preparing to seize these new business opportunities.
The lessons from twelve case studies on energy storage business models give a glimpse of the future and show what players can do today. The advent of new energy storage business models will affect all players in the energy value chain. In this publication we offer some recommendations.
Energy storage is an important link for the grid to efficiently accept new energy, which can significantly improve the consumption of new energy electricity such as wind and photovoltaics by the power grid, ensuring the safe and reliable operation of the grid system, but energy storage is a high-cost resource.
In anticipation of a bright future, the first projects with energy storage are being set up. We have analyzed some of these cases and clustered them according to their po-sition in the energy value chain and the type of revenues associated with the business model.
